Since the introduction of the 2004 Natural Health Product (NHP) Regulations thousands of safe, effective products have been criminalized and removed from store shelves. Although practitioners have been exempt from the full force of these regulations to date, this may change. More than 70% of Canadian citizens that use Natural health Products (NHPs) for their health are being affected by these regulations and will be even more so in the future. This challenge is reinforced by many other side affects of these regulations such as NHPs with lower potencies, higher prices, many products having completely disappeared and even supplement orders from United States and Europe being seized at the border.
Health Canada’s authority for supplements: The NHPD (Natural Health Products Directorate), has made new considerations that are seemingly “reasonable” to the average person, but the fundamental principles to remove products from the market will underpin the regulations today, as they did when they were first established.
Health Canada is effectively making your treatment decisions for you, by restricting your ability to make choices in the best interests of your clients, and your family. The number of disappearing products has reached crisis level and will continue to deepen until there is a change in the law.
We can no longer take our rights and freedoms to practice and live holistically for granted.

ABOUT SHAWN BUCKLEY
Shawn Buckley, LLB, is a constitutional and criminal lawyer with expertise in the Food and Drugs Act, and regulations.
He is the President of Canada’s NHPPA (Natural Health Products Protection Association), and authored the Charter of Health Freedom, a proposed law to fully protect the rights of natural health product stakeholders. The NHPPA has been in existence since 2008. In that time it has grown from a grass roots movement to become internationally recognized and quoted. Between Shawn’s busy law practice and advising many of Canada’s supplement companies you know and love, he writes articles for the NHPPA, discussion papers for the industry, is interviewed for radio and print media, attends international NHP activists’ legal round table meetings, and lectures on natural health product protection, food rights and EMFs.
